Conservation Engagement Specialist (Volunteer Programs) Full-time

Given objectives set by the VP of Mission Engagement, the Conservation Engagement Specialist (Volunteer Programs) is directly responsible for leading the recruitment, training, and coordination or teen and adult education volunteers at Riverbanks Zoo & Garden. As a direct report to the Conservation Engagement Manager, the Specialist supports program delivery, mentor’s volunteers and part-time staff, and collaborated with team members to strengthen the volunteer and guest experience. The specialist will ensure programs are inclusive, impactful, and create connections and inspire actions to impact conservation. 

Essential Functions:

  • Coordinating all aspects of teen and adult education volunteer programs, including recruitment, onboarding, training, scheduling, and recognition.
  • Developing and delivering engaging, conservation-focused volunteer training sessions focused on interpretation, communication, and guest engagement best practices.
  • Creating and maintaining volunteer resources such as handbooks, training guides, and communication tools.
  • Monitoring and evaluating volunteer performance; providing coaching and feedback to ensure program quality and a positive, inclusive volunteer culture.
  • Tracking volunteer participation, hours, and impact metrics; contributing to reporting and program evaluation.
  • Leading volunteer integration into Conservation Engagement activities (e.g., interpretive carts, seasonal programs, ambassador experiences).
  • Collaborating with fellow Specialists and the Manager to ensure consistent, mission-aligned programming across all guest-facing education experiences.
  • Mentoring and supporting Senior Instructors and Instructors by modeling strong engagement strategies and providing area-specific guidance.
  • Communicating challenges and opportunities to the Conservation Engagement Manager and contributing to continuous improvement.
  • Supporting special events, community outreach, and seasonal education initiatives as needed.
  • Maintaining compliance with all safety protocols, animal welfare standards, and Riverbanks’ professional expectations.
  • Uphold all safety protocols, animal welfare guidelines, and Riverbanks’ professional standards.
  • Other projects and duties as set forth by the Conservation Engagement Manager.

Education and Experience: High School diploma required. Bachelor’s degree in education, science-related, or human services field preferred; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience that provides the required knowledge and abilities. Minimum of one year of experience in informal education or volunteer coordination required. Experience working with youth and/or adult volunteers preferred. Excellent written and verbal communication skills required. Availability to work weekends, evenings, and holidays is essential. Must possess or be eligible for a valid SC driver’s license.
